Letterpress and collage on paper
The letterpressed words are a quote from Absalom, Absalom!: “He wasn’t a gentleman. He wasn’t even a gentleman. He came here with a horse and two pistols and a name which nobody ever heard before, knew for certain was his own any more than the horse was his own or even the pistols, seeking some place[…]” The folded book addresses the very American concept of “White trash” and masculine entitlement turned violent.

Untitled (cards)

Silkscreen on card stock
These three cards were featured in the Mama Paula's Gris-Gris Grits installation, a voodoo-inspired shrine room dedicated to Ms. Paula Deen and her followers. Complete with recipe reviews hand-copied in colorful gel pen and meaningless but seemingly sacred patterns drawn in grits on the floor, the installation addressed the patriarchal obedience of privileged white women to their “neutral” class and socialized gender roles while seeking exotic culture through the appropriation of Southern Black culture. The front of the cards show a parcel map of a suburban subdivision, the contents of each include a pair of nearly identical recipe reviews sourced from Paula Deen’s website.
